KATHMANDU : The traditional Sindoor Jatra was celebrated in Madhyapur Thimi was celebrated this year with much delight. The festival is celebrated every year on the third day of the 10-day Bisket Festival by the Newar community of Madhyapur Thimi to signify the coming of Spring.
The festival is marked by taking out a procession of 32 chariots or palanquins which house the idols of various gods and goddesses. A theatrical show takes place between the chariots to recreate the Hindu mythological stories where the chariot housing the god Ganesh is chased by the other chariots. Devotees celebrate with traditional music, dancing, and by throwing red vermillion, known as sindoor, on each other.
As the festival comes to a close, participants rush to Bode to witness the unique tongue-boring festival that takes place on the same day.
