KATHMANDU, Feb 15: Madhyapur Thimi Municipality has sealed an under-construction building of Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN).
The under construction building of CAAN at Gatthaghar of Madhyapur Thimi Municipality-3 was to function as training academy for Air Traffic Controller (ATC). It was shut down by the local municipality which accused CAAN of starting the construction without taking prior approval from them.
CAAN had started the construction of its two-storied training academy building at the estimated cost of Rs 70 million a month ago.
In addition, the Department of Aviation has occupied around 400 Ropanis of land owned by local people for the operation of aviation related services.
Municipality Chief Madan Sundar Shrestha says, “CAAN has overtaken land from the locals and minimal compensation, and leased a substantial amount of land to private company Eicher, which has used it for operating grill factories, car body manufacturing factory, and storing heavy machinery for hydropower companies, etc. Eicher owes the municipality a total tax of 43 million 400 thousand rupees for these activities, which it has neglected to pay.”
The project manager of the ATC training academy building, Narbikram Thapa, said that the municipality has sealed construction of the building without any warning to CAAN.
