Cable Car System to be Installed at Sarangkot

POKHARA, Nov 23: Annapurna Cable Car has announced plans to install a cable car system at Sarangkot and have it running within 18 months.
The cable car system is being installed from Sedibagar, Pokhara to Sarangkot through a distance of 2.5 kilometers. The contract to build the bottom and top stations have been given to Chitwan Co-E Company, which was also responsible for building the first cable car system of Nepal at Manakamana. The inauguration ceremony for the cable car system took place on 29th Mangsir of last year.
The official contract between Annapurna Cable Car and Chitwan Co-E for the construction of the cable car system was signed on Monday. The system will be built at a cost of Rs. 1 Arab and 10 Crores. According to the Managing Director of Chitwan Co-E, Rajesh Babu Shrestha, the bottom and top stations will be constructed at a cost of R.s 40 Lakhs and the project will be completed within one and a half years. “We will begin the project with an aim to finish it within one and a half years,” he said, “we intend to finish it before the contract deadline.”
The construction of the cable car towers and gondolas will be handled by Japan’s Nippon Cable. According to the company, it will design the system to accommodate 500 passengers in one hour, with one gondola being able to carry 8 passengers. 85% of the investment for the cable car project is coming from Nepali businesses while Japanese groups hold 15% of the investment. Kalu Gurung, President of Annapurna Cable Car, said that it will be possible for people to visit Sarangkot by cable car within one and a half years. “We will finish constructing the cable car system within one and a half years,” he said, “we believe that the project will be a milestone for the popular tourist destination of Pokhara which is Sarangkot.”
Among the Japanese group of industries is entrepreneur Takashi Miyahara. While Miyahara was born a Japanese citizen, he has earned a Nepali citizenship a number of years ago, having abandoned his Japanese citizenship. Miyahara is the director at Hotel Himalaya, situated in Lalitpur. He is also constructing a hotel at Sarangkot. With a fixed capital of 58 Crores 50 Lakhs and current capital of 50 Lakhs, the system is being constructed with a total capital of 60 crores.
10% of the investment is said to belong to locals and will be turned into public limited. According to him, 49% of the shares will be given to the general public. The project will also see an investment by Banijya Bank, under leadership of Sunrise Bank.
The cable car system, which is being constructed with technology from Nippon Company of Japan, will have 16 to 36 gondolas. The system, which is spread across 2100 meters with 14 poles, will have a travel time of 7 to 9 minutes. The cable car travel will also allow excellent sight-seeing of mountains and lakes, making it a new destination for tourists.
The cable car travel will make it possible to view Fewa Tal Lake, Shanti Stupa, Pokhara Bazaar, Himalayan ranges, and nearby places at once. Passengers will also be able to witness sunrise and sunset from the gondolas. The company informed that it intends to begin service from 5 am since Sarangkot is famous as a spot for viewing the sunrise. Sarangkot is daily visited by 3500 to 4000 tourists. The taxi fare from Pokhara to Sarangkot starts at Rs. 1500 and the commute takes around 45 minutes.
