KATHMANDU, Aug 20: Nepal witnessed an exponential growth in foreign tourist arrivals in July this year although the month is traditionally off-season in Nepal's tourism sector, Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) said on Friday.
According to NTB data, the Himalayan country witnessed a growth of 73.5 percent in total tourist arrivals in the rainy month this year compared the same month in 2017 as the country welcomed a total of 73,285 foreign tourists.
From January to July in 2018, the country received a total of 593,299 international visitors; a rise of 18 percent compared to same period in 2017, according to NTB, the main tourism promotional body of Nepal.
As the Himalayan country witnessed strong growth in arrivals from its two largest source markets, India and China, as well as other important markets such as the United States and Britain, total tourist arrivals surged in July.
"We had never witnessed such an exponential growth in tourist arrivals in July in the past because the month used to be considered off-season," Deepak Raj Joshi, chief executive officer of NTB told Xinhua on Friday.
"Promotional activities in key international markets including China, India and the United States with the message that Nepal is the place to visit even in the rainy season helped tourist arrivals grow rapidly."
