KATHMANDU, Aug 15: The Finance Minister Dr. Yuvraj Khatiwada has informed that discussions are taking place to attract private investment in Nijgadh International Airport. Minister Khatiwada, who had been vying for private investments in larger projects, informed that discussions are taking place to construct Nijgadh International Airport in private investment modality.

Speaking with the economic committee of the House of Representatives, the minister said that the government has prioritized large projects and has opened the channel for private investments. He also informed that the government is intent on increasing investment in social and other sectors. He clarified that as projects that are undertaken with foreign aid and loans fall under the responsibility of the government, it would be better to undertake large projects like airports and hydropower projects through private investment.

"The Pokhara and Bhairahawa Airports are being constructed by the government itself. If the government were to undertake other commercial projects which can easily bring in private investments by itself, then there will be a deficit in investments in the social sector. For this reason, we have started discussions about whether Nijgadh Airport can be constructed through private investments with the Tourism Ministry," he said to the committee.
