KATHMANDU, Jan 18: Ranipokhari has been referred to be reconstructed in the traditional design by the Department of Archaeology. The 11-member committee formed by the DoA under its past Director General, Bishnu Raj Karki, has referred the reconstruction work to be done in the traditional style.
The heritage monument was damaged in the earthquake of 2015, and the responsibility of reconstruction was taken over by Kathmandu Metropolitan. It sought to reconstruct the historical monument in a totally modern design. The Department of Archaeology had stepped forward due to this and had begun the reconstruction of the Balgopaleshwor Temple inside the pond premises on its own.
The plan of reconstructing Ranipokhari in a modern way was stopped after protests from locals and the Department of Archaeology, who stressed the historical significance of Ranipokhari and opposed the reconstruction of the monument in the modern design.
