Domestic air passengers increase by 26% in 2017

KATHMANDU, Mar 10: Domestic air passengers have increased by 26% in the year 2017. 2,388,586 passengers have traveled to different destinations inside the country over the last year.
The number of domestic air travelers in 2016 was 22% higher than in 2015. 1,757,596 people used airways services to travel within the country in 2016. Likewise, 1,364,048 passengers traveled through various airport in the country in the year 2015.
According to the airport officials, the number of passengers travelling to different destinations in the country via Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in 2017 is 1,270,102. However, the total number of passengers arriving to Kathmandu is 1,138,489. According to the officials the highest number of air passengers was 2, 86,827 in October and the lowest number was 1, 47,673 in December.
The number of domestic flights has also increased in comparison to 2016. In 2017, total of 93,097 flights have taken off and landed. However, in 2016 the number of was 73,876 and in 2015, it was 67,867. Despite this rapid increase in the numbers of air travel in the country, the airports of the country has seen no expansion and upgrade while the expansion and new airport projects are moving at exceedingly slow pace.
