KATHMANDU, Jan 03: A total of 940,228 foreign tourists have visited Nepal in 2017, compared to 753,002 in 2016. The rate of increase in tourists was 24% in 2017 compared to the prior year. However, if this percentage keeps the pace, the total tourists visiting Nepal in 2018 is estimated to be about 1.2 million.

The Chief Secretary of Hotel Association Nepal (HAN), Mr. Binayak Shah, informed that due to the gradually appearing political stability, more than 1.2 million tourists are estimated to visit Nepal in 2018. He also added that though the new airport is still not ready, if the Tribhuwan International Airport is well managed, it can help in increasing and managing the tourist inflow rate. In the year 2011, it was aimed to increase the tourist rate in Nepal to 2million but even though there is a possibility of fulfilling this aim, it has still not turned into reality after 6 years.

The President of Nepal Association Of Tours And Travel Agency(NATTA), Mr. Madhusudan Acharya has also said that in 2018 more than 2.2 million tourists might be visiting Nepal. If we are able to increase the rate by 30% annually by 2030, there will be 7 million tourists visiting Nepal, added Acharya.

In 2012 803,092 tourists visited Nepal, but due to the earthquake in 2015, the tourists’ number in that year decreased massively to 538,000.

In 2017, there were 260,032 Indian tourists and 2,004,664 Chinese tourists visited Nepal.
