Janai Purnima is a Hindu festival celebrated in Nepal. It is mainly celebrated by the Brahmins and Chhetris of Nepal. On this day, men change their Janai and visit different temples of lord Shiva all across the country.

This festival is mostly celebrated in Kumbeshwarin of Patan, Gosaikunda of Lantanag and also in Charikot of Dolakha. On this day, a large number of Brahmins take ritual dips in the water and worship gods. In Kathmandu valley, Newar call this festival Gunhi Punhi. They prepare a soup of a mixture of beans called Kwati as special foods for that day. Kwati is the mixture of different kind of pulses.

Janai purnima is also called Raksha Bandhan. It is celebrated among Hindu people residing all around the world. On this day, sister prepares good meal for the brother and ties rakhi around the wrist of brother. When I asked my mom about the importance of Raksha Bandhan. My mom told me that when we put the rakhi on the wrist of brother, it makes them strong and they will protect their sister from the negativity. Rakhi is also known as the celebration of special bond between the brothers and sisters.
