SOLUKHUMBU, Jan 10: The people residing in Solukhumbu district are migrating towards Kathmandu and other places in order to escape the cold winter season. A few months ago, the Khumbu region was crowded. The airport, camping sites, hotels, and lounges were full of tourists but now these places have become secluded.
According to the local resident of Lukla, Toya Shrestha, most of the people involved in business sectors and local people have already shifted due to the extremely cold weather. After Christmas, the tourism season has also come to an end. The people residing in Gorakhsep, Labuche, Gokyo, Chukung, Jongla, Thangnak, and Thame have also shifted to other places. People are compelled to shift to other locations due to the extreme cold which lasts up to Mid-Chaitra.
According to one local resident of Khumjung, Pemba Sherpa, in Tenzing Hillary Airport there is a direct flight from Lukla to Kathmandu, therefore people's first choice is to migrate to Kathmandu. People are also visiting holy places to get rid of this cold season. Due to this winter season, people only stay there for around 6 months. Thus, now after the arrival of winter, the base camps are now empty.
