POKHARA, Feb 16: The famous Lakeside area of Pokhara is to be declared as a no vehicle zone for the second time in 5 years. The earlier attempt had been cancelled as the rule could not be implemented.
Interest groups say that the move is being made to allow tourists with a quiet and calm place to enjoy themselves. Police Incharge of Baidam Police Department, Basanta Sharma, said that discussions are taking place for the move to be implemented. "We are hoping to start implementation of the idea from the next week if possible," he said.
Parking spots will be built on both sides of the area while the permit for building diversions have been submitted to the Ward Chief of Pokhara Lekhnath Metropolitan City Ward No. 6 in order to turn around vehicles coming into the area.
The first stage of the campaign includes making Lakeside vehicle-free once a week on Friday, said Kedarnath Sharma, the campaign's architect.
In the first phase, the no-vehicle zone will extend from Hallanchowk to Barahighat.
