Minister of Tourism developing plan to increase tourism contribution to GDP

KATHMANDU, Mar 25: The Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Rabindra Prasad Adhikari, is preparing a work plan to increase the contribution of tourism sector in Nepal’s GDP up to 25 percent.

Minister Adhikari informed about the plan in a meeting with representatives from Journalists Association of Tourism (JAT Nepal) on Thursday. He said that a work plan is being developed to increase the 3.5 percent contribution of tourism sector in Nepal’s GDP, adding that the public will notice a change in the industry within a year.

The minister also said that the work is being done with the aim to attract 1.5 million tourists by 2020. He said that the government will give special priority to develop tourism infrastructure and work in support of the private sector as per the work plan.

The establishment of a tourism university is also in the works, said Minister Adhikari. President of JAT Nepal, Narayan Bhandari, stressed the importance of religious tourism and the value of Nepali art and culture, saying that the government should focus on the development of unique and traditional tourism destination.
