Pokhara-based club extends support to international zoo

POKHARA, April 21: The United Club Pokhara has extended a financial assistance of more than a million rupees for construction of an international zoo here.

Club Chairman Shuk Bahadur Gurung and Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), Kaski President Dipendra Shrestha jointly handed over a cheque of Rs 1.85 million to Zoo Construction Committee Coordinator, Himal Bakhrel. The zoo is currently under construction at Pachbhaiya locality of Pokhara – Leknath Metropolis – 31.
Gurung said the club has already donated Rs 3.5 million till date for building the zoo after its construction kicked off two years ago.
The zoo straddles three community forests over an area of 134 hectares. At present, the zoo has python, nilgai or blue bull (Boselaphus tragocamelus), deer, wild cat, owl and eagle.
The club has also set up a revolving fund at Mahendra Secondary School in Dharmi in order to provide scholarships to students coming from poor economic background.
