CHITWAN : The sole adult gharial (Gavialis gangeticus) crocodile of Chitwan National Park (CNP) was found dead getting trapped onto a big fishing net.
According to CNP Chief Conservation Officer Ram Chandra Kandel, the gharial was found dead with its snout trapped in a big fishing net at Khoriya Thursday. Rapti and Narayani Rivers were its home. Though the use of a big fishing net that is known by 'tiyari jaal' has been banned, its illegal use has not stopped yet. The carcass was buried Thursday itself.
The death of a male crocodile will certainly affect the crocodile breeding, CNP information officer Nurendra Aryal said. In case of the CNP, the gharial is considered rare relatively other species of crocodile and the park has established a crocodile breeding centre here to conserve large aquatic reptiles.
