KATHMANDU, Jan 04: Starred hotels are opening up across the country at a strong pace due to growing optimism in the tourism sector.

Three 4-star hotels opened in 2016 outside the valley, Hotel Opera in Mahendranagar, Cygnett Inn Krishna Hotel in Nepalgunj and Hotel Ichchha in Simara. The new hotels have opened after a three-decade growth hiatus in the industry.

Hotel Shanker of Lazimpat and Hotel Himalaya of Lalitpur were the only four-star hotels in Nepal till date. The additions bring the total number of 4-star hotels in Nepal to five. Additionally, the recently inaugurated Soaltee Sibkrim Hotels and Resorts of Nepalgunj, and Hotel Mystic Mountain in Nagarkot have also applied for 4-star rating.

General Secretary of Hotel Association Nepal (HAN), Binayak Shah, said that new hotels are opening up across the country as the market for the hotel business is steadily increasing. With the conclusion of the provincial and legislative elections, Nepal is slowly embarking in federal structure, and tourism is a major way for all provincial governments to raise budget for development works, he said.

The government is also focusing on promoting the tourism sector of Nepal, having recently relaxed the requirements for starred hotels outside the valley. The growing potential in the tourism business has attracted more than 50 billion rupees of investment for the construction of starred hotels.
