Sustainable management and proper utilisation of forest resources stressed

KATHMANDU, April 12: Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation Shankar Bhandari has said the sustainable management and proper utilisation of forest resources can lead the country towards prosperity.

Speaking at a programme organised on the occasion of 57th anniversary of the Department of Plant Resources and 18th Plants Day here today, the Forest Minister said a role of forest sector was pivotal as of the agriculture, tourism and hydropower sectors in regard with the economic progress of the country.

Admitting the government's failure to execute works effectively and efficiently in absence, he said, political stability, Minister Bhandari took the opportunity to direct employees of Ministry subordinate bodies to work in such a way so that results could be seen in the efforts of the conservation of biodiversity.

He insisted on the need of increasing timber production to meet its demand at home.

Secretary at the Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation Prakash Mathema said human activities and impact of climate change had pushed some species of plants towards the risk of extinction, underlining the need of collective efforts to save forest resources.

Department Director General Dr Akhileshwar Lal Karna said the Department since its establishment had been dedicated to the building of an economically prosperous Nepal with the identification of natural resources and their utilisation with the adaptation of a friendly technology.

On the occasion, this year's   'National Plant Resources Award' carrying a purse of Rs 100,000 was presented to Prof  Dr Pramod Kumar Jha. The Department decided to  award  Jha for his remarkable contribution to the conservation , promotion and  proper utlisation of plant resources.

At the programme, a book titled ' Nepal's  Lauthsalla (Himalayan Yew) '  was also launched.
