Tourism Department preparing new hotel ratings criteria

KATHMANDU: The Tourism Department is developing new criterion for rating hotels, following complaints that existing criteria were not scientifically determined.

Director General of the Department, Dandu Raj Ghimire, said that the draft of the new criteria will be ready within a week. This will lead to some changes in criteria for starred hotels, and those for non-starred and tourist hotels will be amended according. The new criterion will be of international standard, he said.

"We are making non-stop efforts," said Ghimire, "we have working groups toiling for 4-5 hours every day." As the criteria have not been amended for a long time, it is being done with consultations and advice from different experts, he reported. He said that the current demand is for an international-standard of rating and criteria, and that the new set of criteria is being prepared to the same standard.

Different criteria will be set for Kathmandu valley and for other districts.
