Sustainable Mountain Development conference 2022 concluded

KATHMANDU, Dec 04: The sustainable mountain development conference concluded with the conclusion that the interests and integrated efforts of all stakeholders are necessary for the sustainable management of the mountains.

In the conference held in Chandragiri, Kathmandu on December 1st, 2nd and 3rd, serious concerns and concerns have been expressed about global climate change and its impact on the Himalayas and the overall environment.

In line with the United Nations General Assembly's announcement that 2022 will be the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development, on the eve of this day, the experts and scientists of the Himalayan region participating in the conference from different countries of the world suggested to the stakeholders that if the mountains are not managed sustainably, it could have serious consequences in both the natural and human sectors.

Experts from Nepal, America, Britain, Japan, China, Vietnam, Chile, Spain and India joined the program through direct and virtual means.

Likewise, heads and representatives of various associations related to tourism in Nepal participated.

The conference was organized by Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and with the technical support and coordination of Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu University, Hokkaido University Japan, University of Colorado America, GLP Japan, WWF Nepal, ICIMOD, UNDP and other organizations.

In the event, Culture Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Jeevan Ram Shrestha said that Nepal is the country of the Himalayas and this program organized in Nepal has helped to convey a positive message on the sustainable development and protection of the Himalayas.

Dr. Alton C. Wire, professor of the University of Colorado, the main speaker of the program, said that the program helped to unite for integrated efforts to protect the Himalayas while minimizing the effects of climate change and its effects on the Himalayan region.

Dr. Dhananjaya Regmi, Cheif Executive Officer (CEO) of NTB  said that he believed that this conference would be successful in influencing the message for the sustainable management of the mountains.

Maniraj Lamichhane, director of NTB, informed that according to the topics raised in the conference, the conference has provided some guidelines to decide the policy for the overall development and protection of the Himalayan region in the future and the conference has been successful.

66 working papers on various topics were presented in the program.
